STIS: how much room does a dog actually need when being crated?

We are trying to get Sophie used to being in a crate. The dogs sleep in crates every night (doors open, with a huge baby gate in front of the area). The dogs usually start the night cozy next to each other in one crate, then one of them will eventually head to their own. (These are large crates, both dogs are roughly 50 lbs. They're not huge dogs, but they are tall enough that I couldn't comfortably fit them in medium crates.)
Today we left the house for a little while and I decided to try locking the doors of the crates. Sophie went into Ferb's and they seemed comfy in there together, so I left them both in one. There wasn't room for them to stretch or move around, but they could both fit in there snuggled next to each other.
Is this a bad idea? Or does it not really matter as long as they are ok together? Ferb usually barks like crazy in his when alone, but today there wasn't a peep. They seemed happy but a tiny bit squished.
