There was some discussion at our family camping trip that my maternal grandfather's ancestry was not entirely German, but also French. We weren't entirely sure which side of where the border is now our ancestors would have been on when they came over.
The Dutch side of her family is fairly well documented (there are books, I'm in one of them). My dad's side is German, Austrian and Italian.
