I totally agree with your second paragraph. I think your first paragraph is a tee shot that landed in the wrong fairway - spoils -- (edited)

She is going to be fighting someone significant just not Brienne. She picked Brienne because she beat the Hound. If she can beat the knight who beat the Hound, then people aren't going to be freaking out when she takes on whoever it is later on and saying "Where did that come from? She wasn't established as a great fighter. Wah, wah, wah"
