The internet's going to remember it as a guy selfishly choosing himself over a woman.
For me, it's a fascinating exploration of loneliness and isolation in its most extreme form. The underlying premise is that it drove him a bit crazy, and companionship brought him back.
He did something unforgivable, but she forgave him. I find that quite beautiful, as a Hallmark movie fan would.
