The way that Netflix is in trouble is that the only thing it has going for it is that it was first. They've already taken on water in terms maintaining a library. Netflix once had an endless library of movies. Now, they have pick and choose based on what's reasonably priced. They had a sweet deal with Disney that they just lost. Moving forward, Netflix's only product is content. If they had licensed their streaming technology better, they'd have a stronger chance of surviving. I feel like the body is already dead, but the head won't know it for a few years.
As for WB, you probably know how acrimonious that relationship has been over the years. Disney's got twice the market cap of TW and could own them literally any time they wanted. Anything that company has, Disney could take. I just don't see the sex of HBO lining up with Disney's brand.
You've hit on the crux, though. The backbone is everything. The question is how much of it needs to be physical. Disney's operating on a couple of backs right now. I'm not sure if they'll remain satisfied with that or not.
