Big media companies like Disney can afford to do it or at least try to go alone. The big question remains whether consumers will follow

I don't need to buy into Disney's streaming service if I just buy the content on DMA. Granted, Disney is getting money but their streaming service could die a cold death if no one feels they need it.
Netflix meanwhile is pursuing original content because it knows that down the road it is incredibly likely they will lose all the big name content as each of those try to go alone leaving them with a smaller catalog + originals.
