Presidents wear many hats.
Head of government
Head of state (not the same as in GB)
Head of party
Head of military.
Obama never sold himself as the head of party effectively. Not enough speeches that mattered, not enough in the weeds work. Even in 2005-2007, he couldn't wait to get away from the Senate where he could accomplish things...but as President, you need your Congress and your Governors on board.
He ignored much of that, Senate was Joe B and the governors didn't get much coverage.
And as such,the Dems have less than 20 governorships and likely mid-40s in the Senate next year.
If the GOP wasn't a dumpster fire on candidates in 2010 and 12, Mitch would have 58-60 votes already.
