Asian elephants are an endangered species, with only 40,000-50,000 remaining. African elephants are considered a vulnerable species with approximately 415,000 remaining.
African elephants are killed for their ivory at a rate of approximately 100 per day, which has long exceeded the birth rate. In September 2016, the Great Elephant Census found that the African elephant population was in drastic decline, having shrunk 30% in just 7 years from 2007 to 2014. The figures for Asian elephants – one of the most social and emotionally intelligent creatures on earth – are even more worrying.
