Here are some of the loose rules I have:

1) Darker/earthtone buttondowns for Fall/Winter. White shirts or white shirts with pinstripes etc for Spring/Summer.
2) A white shirt can be worn in Fall/Winter provided it is part of a suit or under a sweatervest.
3) Black slacks pretty much get the Fall/Winter treatment. Stone colored slacks for Spring/Summer only.
4) If it is a gray weather day in the Spring/Summer I tend not to wear the stone colored slacks. I consider them to be sunshine day wear. Gray weather days in the Spr/Sum also allow for wearing darker clothes (ie: the black slacks).
