I have met plenty, I respect all the men who've talked to me about it, but it's inevitably re-writing history on some level.

Slavery was a major part of the articles of secession. It was racist propaganda used by the South to stir up violence and fight against the North. Sure, were there common folk who didn't care about slavery? Of course, but you can't be a "proud Confederate" for those common folk without also supporting the local and state governments who were fighting to keep slavery and enforce the Fugitive Slave Law.
