People don't understand how fare classes and airline inventory work.

While $3258.50 doesn't sound right to me, I definitely say the phenomenon yesterday where flights skyrocketed in price as there was a run on tickets and all the lower fare buckets sold out thus leaving only expensive fares, and limited ticket, available. Plus, these were fare buckets for travel within 3 days, which also tend to have higher fares.
I definitely saw one ways out of RSW for over $1000 at one point.
The system is automatically designed to reprice as fare buckets sell out. However, it's unusual for there to be a sudden run on tickets so it's highly unusual for prices to rise from, say, $200 to $1000 in a day. But that's what happened. There will be tons of misinformed 'price gouging' posts and articles about this.
