With their exit blocked, the only way out was a 14 mile hike. Initially on their own, a ranger hiked in on that trail and started leading them out - some of them in swimsuits. All the while embers falling down around them as some hikers put out little fires that cropped up along the trail. With darkness falling, they had the shelter in place until dawn. It sounds utterly terrifying.
I wonder if any folks headed down the blocked trail earlier and no one realized it yet. The report of who started the fire - kids with fireworks - was from a woman heading up the trail who doubled back after she started seeing smoke behind her and realizing she might get trapped.
