The more conservative Christian sects still rely on the Old Testament, rules-based God; the God who cares only for those who follow the rules regardless of faith or spirit.
That is where TGP does a subtle but excellent take on the dynamics and conflicts of Christuan theologies. If TGP was actually heaven, it would fit Pentacostal theology pretty well. Less than half a percent of people follow God's rules well enough to be saved. The rest of us, regardless of our faith or spirit, end up in hell.
But then at the end of the season, TGP ends up being based on a New Testament God who has placed the unbelievers in hell - or maybe purgatory.
