The argument is that the establishment GOP has to spend money to defeat these insurgents and that'll weaken them against Democrats in the general election.
The truth is that these insurgents - particularly in places like Alabama - will win in the general election and then vote along the party line. So the GOP still comes out ahead. Eventually the establishment will stop fighting them, pushing the party more to the right. It might turn the Senate over to the tea party, but so long as it says (R) after their name, the estslishment won't care.
