In response to "What kilbo heard: blah blah notated blah blah notes" by oblique, SuperFeud Champion and Eighth Astronaut

hahahaha, I'm just regurgitating terms I've heard and know a little about.

I believe each reservation is known as a PNR (Passenger Name Record). Maybe each passenger in a reservation is its own PNR, not sure.

So think about a situation when people are traveling together but are not on the same reservations and A) a flight is canceled and they need to be rebooked OR B) if a plane type changes and seats need to be reassigned

In A) the people on one PNR could be put on new flight 1 and the people on the other PNR to new flight 2
In B) the people on one PNR could be put in Row 17 and the people on the other PNR in row 35

because the airline has no way of knowing these people are traveling together.

Linking PNRs, in theory, can help avoid this. But I *think* linking PNRs mostly just means that there is a note in the PNR about the link, I don't know if it's an automatic combination. So if it's just a note, an agent would need to read the note.
