I've never been to HI, so this is only general advice.

Figure out how much is accessible on foot at/near hotel for food, etc. Then figure out how far you can get on hotel shuttle.
Then, make sure they have Lyft, etc (some places don't) and or/availability of taxis.
My personal preference is to avoid car, or only get it for the one day it's really needed, but I don't travel with a family, let alone teenagers :)
