Downtown has grown and changed so much since I've lived there, this is super outdated -- (edited)

who knows if half these places are even there anymore (I'll google to check). There could be newer better places that I just don't know about.
Burgers: Hut's Hamburgers (807 W 6th) is a classic. Or get a burger at Casino El Camino (517 E 6th)
Tex-Mex: I'll have to look into where to go in downtown/south Austin for that nowadays. Suffice to say there will be many great options, just duck in someplace, it will almost certainly be far better than DC even if it's mediocre for Austin
Pizza by the slice: Home Slice Pizza: 1415 South Congress. Yes, I just recommended a by the slice pizza place in Austin.
Ice cream: Amy's Ice Cream. Multiple locations, closest to you is probably 1012 W 6th (just past Lamar) or if you are in SoCo: 1301 South Congress. Get the Mexican Vanilla (my new nickname for Jorge). Trust me, it's great.
Note: There is also an Amy's across from Gate 12 in the airport. It's next to Salt Lick in the airport so you can knock both out in the airport.
I'll keep thinking. It's been nearly 10 years since I lived there (eep!)
