My advice for you right now would be to stick with scout rifles and auto rifles. They have the easiest learning curve and they are all viable weapons for PvE.

groiny named a few of the better ones below.

I'd avoid hand cannons at the moment.
If you want to try a pulse rifle, I'd recommend Nightshade if you have it.
For auto rifles, as groiny mentioned, Uriel's Gift is great in both PvE and PvP. Scathelocke is also a nice auto.
Nameless Midnight is probably the best overall (purple) scout in the game.
