one of them had never been sailing before, so maybe she just believed everything the other one told her?
I can generally believe them just not thinking it was a tremendously big deal while they still had plenty of food and water, but the shark thing is a stretch. great whites - I wouldn't say attack - but definitely bump up against boats in a way you could describe as aggressive.
I'd also not be particularly surprised if it turned out they'd been hanging out on/near some semi-deserted island for a while.
