At first, I could tell this film was *daring* me to judge the heck out of these characters. That's fine. A common trope that was effective. But then, I found myself saying "Oh, I would not have done that." "Oh, I would not be cussing in front of that child," etc. (I also found the lack of a grandmother very interesting). And then something got peeled away and I empathized hard for this little girl.
I also became aware not only that I was watching someone's version of a "realness" reality, but that they were women being women. The fact that it's a certain kind of woman in a very specific setting made it fresh. I grew up in a house of all boys and a mom who sort of hid her feminine side, so this was voyeuristic for me. And all kinds of enlightening. Women being women without a man to think about or relate to. I remembered even the most girl power-seeming movies have some sort of man in the picture. That can be a distraction from showing women just being with each other. I genuinely appreciated that being depicted for me and done so well, so "real."
