D.C. Comics’ greatest superheroes — from Superman to Hawkgirl — band together to fight apocalyptic threats.
Watch ... for a colorful, kid-friendly adventure series that evolves into an epic. Obeying the principle that there’s no reason to bring together characters as powerful as Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter unless there’s serious trouble, the two seasons of “Justice League” tell action-packed, multipart stories in which the heroes team up against some D.C.’s most formidable supervillains. The three seasons of “Justice league Unlimited” pick up directly where the previous series leaves off, but with a vastly expanded roster of League-members, and a larger interest in what it means when a group of Godlike beings are allowed to decide how best to keep the world safe. While the team is confronting apocalyptic evil in spectacular fight scenes, they’re also squabbling with governmental agencies that want to keep the league in line. Neither incarnation of the show is too intense for children; tweens and teens (and their parents) are likely to appreciate the deeper themes.
Skip ... if you’re completely unfamiliar with the Justice League comics or the individual members of the team (Batman and Superman notwithstanding). Past attempts to bring these heroes to the small screen — like the stilted ‘70s hit “Super Friends” — didn’t bother much with the decades of their comic book mythology, but the two ‘00s series assume that viewers already know the personality quirks of these characters and will get excited when lesser-known champions like Dr. Fate and Deadman show up. Newcomers won’t be completely lost, but they may not have as much fun as fans of the original comics.
