Because they knew they weren't a long-term threat to contend and wanted to tear it down

thus, the Sammy W. trade and the Dareus trade...
starting 5&2 was never part of the deal, and as soon as they had 2 stinkers in a row, they were like, eff this, we're done.
And now, the coach likely lost the team who actually were playoff contenders.
