On the one side, you’ve got doomsayers saying it will be the end of the open internet and on the other side you’ve got corporations saying “trust us”.

I, for one, don’t want to see internet access carved into walled gardens and fiefdoms. That’ll be the death of it - and facebook’s already coming close to that as it is. Small internet businesses won’t be able to survive or grow competitive with the mega corps. It’s hard enough as it is.
It’s a big issue. It dovetails with corporation-controlled censorship and spying.
So you’ll also have all the drawbacks of the great firewall of China, with no government oversight.
