sitwap - Ravens QB Ryan Mallett gets fined $12K from a game he didn't even play in

Hopefully whatever Baltimore Ravens quarterback Ryan Mallett had to tell the officials in last Sunday’s game was worth more than $12,000 to him.

Mallett was fined $12,154 by the NFL, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, for “repeated verbal abuse of game officials.” Mallett didn’t even play in the game and the Ravens won 23-0.

The Ravens were given a 15-yard penalty during the game due to Mallett. It’s rare to see a 15-yard penalty called in the NFL for someone on the sideline berating the game officials. According to ESPN it was unclear what Mallett was upset about, but the penalty came after a low hit wasn’t called against Ravens starting quarterback Joe Flacco.

Mallett’s fine comes on top of whatever Ravens coach John Harbaugh did to punish him. Harbaugh was not happy about the penalty on Monday.

“If he said what the officials said he said, sure. He will be disciplined here in house, I promise you. As much as I love Ryan Mallett, I’m not cool with that,” Harbaugh said, according to ESPN.

This isn’t Mallett’s first time upsetting a coach. Most famously, when he was with the Houston Texans he overslept and missed a team flight to Miami, and had to fly commercial to get there. He was cut shortly after.

This violation isn’t quite as serious, or costly. But it’s a pretty steep price to pay for some angry words toward an official.
