I think the thing that's going to save this and Avengers 4 in that regard is....spoilers.

Significant threat of loss. One of the main problems with superhero movies is that they always win and don't really get hurt.
I'm not sure about this movie but in Avengers 4, all their contracts are up so there will be legitimate stakes.
