Both scenes are fine, but nothing special (IMO). I agree with what you're saying - that he's charismatic enough to be a bigger star but...

bigger movies tend not to showcase action as well as smaller ones, partly because of the way they are filmed with lots of quick cuts, etc, and also because large budgets mean less risk in filming scenes (what if the star gets injured?) and the need to appeal to a broader audience than the straight action audience.
So I'm happy that Statham still gets to do smaller (and fairly awful) action movies as well as Hollywood ones
