I'm not self-employed either, but anyone can tuck away a bunch of expenses in a side-gig.

I'm doing mediation, group facilitation, strategic and political consulting on the side right now, plus officiating the occasional marriage on the side. I'm just going to lump all that into an LLC.
And when I reinstate to fully active with the bar, I'm going to set up a Professional Corporation for that.
If I can dump a whole bunch of expenses in there -- cell phone, travel, equipment, office supplies, meals and entertainment, etc. -- you're damn right I'm gonna do it.
All within the bounds of the law and ethics of course.
