Looking for a bike recommendation.

I'm looking for something that I can ride around my neighborhood for some exercise. All on the road, not a mountain bike, but not long distances either. Eventually riding around alongside my daughter.

I don't know much going in. There are brand names I'm aware of. Got nothing beyond that.

Not sure of the price because it will be a gift but probably in the less than $500 range.
