My grandfather used to purchase hefty amounts of gold and silver coins because he thought Jimmy Carter was going to send us back to the Dark Ages. And then, during the first Clinton Administration, he branched out into purchasing hocked engagement rings from pawn shops because "you can barter the gems when the Chinese invade."
I seem to have inherited some of that from him, too. I've been researching all the Gold Double Eagles he left me to watch their value, and I have one of us old Theresa silver thalers at work as my "worry stone" to play with during the day.
