5-ish states have no income tax. The states that have income tax have varying systems. NY, NJ, CA tend to have higher state tax burdens due to a combo of tax rates + higher cost of living (thus higher income having those rate applied to it). Some cities, including NYC, also have city income tax, but that's not as common in the US.
