I look at it much more as anti-Abrams, if anything.
Hux? He's going to be slapstick comic relief.
Snoke, the most powerful force user in the galaxy? Killed off without so much as explaining his backstory.
Phasma? Dead after 40 seconds of screen time. Doesn't even take her helmet off.
Maz? Thrown into a weird conference call, then dispatched.
Rey's mythology? There is none. Which is the point, I think.
These are all things I can live with (or endorse fully), but I absolutely understand the disappointment of having certain expectations dashed.
Where I think Johnson made a huge mistake was his treatment of Luke. The fact that he had a moment of weakness in Kylo's hut was a great touch. It showed that Luke wasn't perfect, the legend everyone wanted him to be, and it explained what set Kylo on the path he's on now.
What's inexcusable to me is that Luke, who knows he fucked up, would sit on an island for 30 years while his sister and friends dealt with the mess he created. I suspect this is what upset Hamill so much when he read the script, and rightly so. It's simply not something Luke would have done and I believe it makes him irredeemable.
