Again, there's no reason to bring her back. The fact that they cast Gwendoline Christie would lead me to believe they had bigger plans but it's clear they don't (or that they changed). That was a death scene.
You're right about Maul; it was the Clone Wars. Still, do you think the fans would have bought Spider-Maul in the prequels? Not a chance. It was a cheat that you can get away with in a cartoon or comic.
And while I think TLJ was absolutely disrespectful to the direction that Abrams was pointing the series, I don't necessarily think it was a bad decision. I couldn't care less that Snoke and Phasma died or that Rey's parents were junkers. I think it's great that Johnson is demystifying the jedi.
