I watched Spider-Man: Homecoming yesterday. Fun flick. One minor issue I have is that no NYC school that I know of has a homecoming dance. ;-) -- (edited)

We have school dances for holidays and other things but homecoming isn't a thing we do. I don't even understand what homecoming dances are for. Is it just to celebrate the new school year? Why is called a homecoming dance? Who's coming home and is school supposed to be home in this instance? Is it about football? Being about football would make sense and explain why it's not something we do since football isn't very popular here like it is other places.
I've seen them in movies so many times but it's not something I've ever experienced and it's not something that happens in our schools.
