So lost in the whole shithole story, did it seem like Congress was pretty close to a broadly accepted bipartisan deal on immigration?

The shithole comment distracted from anything else. If they can get a broad enough compromise then Trump is irrelevant. Dare him to veto something that’s going to be overridden. Of course there might be the votes to pass but not override based on factions in both parties. I was actually hoping that there would be enough backlash against Trump that Congress would say screw you and just legislate around him but Trump seems to still have a hold on a large portion of the Republicans.
