I think it might work even better if the Jags win it all. The Jags become champs not long after he dies and he is stuck believing they're as bad as they were at that time, or at least never good enough to win. That just reinforces that he really is in the bad place.
Then he finally reaches the real good place and finds out the truth.
Though making him watch a heartbreaking loss may be worse.
