The ten cent version: The three you mention (and the many others you haven't) aren't conservatives in either traditional or modern senses, but populists and the right is simply more prone to populist movements at the moment.

Many causes for that, though pace of society change, economic factors and government cynicism at all time highs certainly contribute. And I still maintain that the reason there is greater space for them nowadays is that many people who should be involved aren't and it has never been easier to organize.

But the punchline (slash danger) is that I could easily envision a wave where the cynical hustlers could emerge on the progressive party side of the ledger too. We're not quite at that boil, but the ingredients are there. (Save the hesitation on society change, which certainly acts as an accelerant.)

I don't see anything systematic on the left that would be an inherent preventative measure of these types.
