They've spent a "half billion dollars, maybe more" on the Falcon Heavy project and nearly cancelled it 3 different times.

Adding the nose cone to the side boosters required redesigning the grid fins (the nose cone caused the fins to lose a lot of control authority).

The center core was basically purpose built for the mission.
