At most it probably just means that their fathers' fathers' fathers'... families both came from France.

You go back far enough and families start getting surnames based on attributes, not lineage. That family makes barrels? They're the Coopers. That family makes stuff from iron? They're the Smiths. That family makes tables? They're the Buffetts.
