what I'm wondering about was why Dakota Fred adventure to divert that river further up the mountain (on their own separate non discovery show)..spoils

apparently failed. this season's gold rush had them depending on money borrowed from, of all people, the Hoffmans. which has to be a kiss of death for the project.
IIRC they were going to take a bunch of plywood and 2x4s to take the river past a waterfall far enough so they could excavate underneath.
