my MIL tells me that was ENTIRELY because of his love triangle, and the fact that all the cameras were broken/pointed away is a coincidence.

though really it appears to have been Ramzan Khadyrov, and Putin was reportedly pissed. with the control he has he doesn't need to kill his opponents. even if the opposition was a factor in the next election, and they didn't bother to rig it, he'd still probably legit win with >60% of the vote.
