He put out The Dance which is an all-time great song; and then the Thunder Rolls video gave him massive press since no country station would show it.

I think (might be wrong), CMT and TNN refused to air the video ... which just made it bigger. I seem to recall VH1 would show it.
He definetly was vital in waking country up from the good ol' boy singers with limited entertainment value.
