I think you're overthinking things. I see lots of articles that pop up later for no immediately discernible reason

Lots of non political ones too. As Will said, if you need outrage about Trump you don't have to dig up old stuff.
Sometimes there's a tiny update that bumps it back into people's attention. Sometimes someone does a weird search and manages to get it trending through sheer randomness. We dint have to attribute malice to everything.
