I made an Excel chart! Box office performance of Best Pictures winners by year.

I used BOM's domestic gross rankings and charted where the BP winners ended up after all the receipts were counted.

The sea change beginning in 2004 is interesting. From 1980 to 2003, every BP winner except for Last Emperor finished in the top 20. From 2004 to 2017, only three have (Departed, Slumdog, King's Speech).
