i have a 2.5 gallon tank, about a month ago it started having this 'white stuff' floating on the top of the water, and alot of it in the top of the filter .... last of my goldfish died, so i broke the tank down, cleaned everything out really good, and set it back up from scratch. i let it run for a few days and all looked great, no white stuff or nothing... i put a cichlid in and now i've got this white stuff again.

any idea as to what's going on?

It could be Ich. You can get medication/tank treatment for it at your local pet store. -- (link) - Stephen May 16, 11:55
Are you testing your water quality? You can get a testing kit that will check pH and ammonia for pretty cheap. - tee-woo-gee May 16, 11:54
