Wiki's broad definition suggests there must be a financial, political, religious or ideological purpose behind the violence in order for it to be called terrorism.

But Wiki also acknowledges that media outlets who wish to convey impartiality may limit their usage of terrorist and terrorism because they are loosely defined, potentially controversial in nature, and subjective terms.
