in Die Hard, Al Powell had blown away Hans and rescued Holly for John McClane

maybe not the worst ending in the world but certainly not as emotionally cathartic as having John do it himself.

at least have Kirk *think* of the solution himself, and then tell Scotty what to do

but if you're the hero of the story, you have to be the one that resolves the conflict and drama

not Deus Ex Scotty
