No they couldn't. The show is completely different in tone, style, pacing, etc than any of the movies.

Irrelevant. They would have gotten a new audience unfamiliar with the show and its association (or lack thereof) with the movies. -- nm

How would they get a "new audience?" Terminatior fans going to see the movie are already likely familiar with the fact there's a Terminator show on.
