In response to "Lars von Trier: "I am the best film director in the world." -- (link)" by Dano

"And I am the best film director in the world. Im not sure God is the best God in the world, but thats okay.

Then came Mondays press conference, which began with a British reporter angrily demanding the von Trier explain and justify the film.

I dont think I have to justify, von Trier said.

Yes you do, yelled the reporter. It was hardly the kind of happy love-in of most Cannes press conferences, but it was about what you might expect when von Trier is involved. He loves to provoke and his movies _ like Beaking the Waves and Manderlay _ can be not just upsetting but can actually move people to hatred.

I cannot justify myself, he said. I make films and I enjoy it very much. . . . I work for myself and do this little film that Im fond of. He then went on, Its the hand of God, Im afraid. And I am the best film director in the world. Im not sure God is the best God in the world, but thats okay.

It soon becomes clear, however, that behind von Triers provocations is a puckish sense of humour (although if you see what happens to people in this movie, you may question that.) He dedicated the film to Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, whom, he said, saw my first film and hated it very much.
