we could poll the mothers here, but they're probably too busy to respond because they're, you know, mothers

quite honestly if it were me, i would probably prefer receiving a gift card for purely practical reasons.
that said i would be bummed if all i received were gift cards. like, if i were at a baby shower and all the parents-to-be received were gift cards, what would there be to squeal over? plus, it's WAY more fun for the gift giver (if they like that sort of thing) to buy funny or cute thingies.

I don't mean to be a contrarian here, but times are tough. Is it ever acceptable to just give a pat on the back and a handshake as a gift?

Another thing to note is that not every gift receives needs to be used right away.

I'm an authority on baby showers by osmosis. My wife wrote the book.

I qualified my statement that if it's a shower gift, that's different. Those are meant to be opened community-style. GCs don't work for that.

exactly, re: gift cards. The denim jacket is great at showers. oh, and moose, most people occasionally bring their babies indoors in the summer.

gift cards are great, I love them...but it feels a little impersonal for his sister's first child, ya know? -- nm
