I've probably spent a total of 3 or 4 months in India but almost exclusively Bangalore (I have transferred in Delhi several times, and went to Chennai for a few days). A few thoughts off the top of my head, many of which you probably already know (in no particular order):
- India is a bit sexist. Well, not even a bit honestly. A lot, I hope that's improving but....
- Road travel takes a long time. IME, they don't have what we think of as 'expressways' though I know they've been working on infrastructure
- Places I haven't been that I'd certainly want to go: Taj Mahal (no doubt you will go there) and Goa
- Check if you need a visa, US people do, even for tourism
- The first time I transferred in Delhi was an LOL escapade of failure all around, but they've improved the airport greatly since then, in a number of ways
- Lots of airline can fly you around India, often cheaply, so that will be easy
- The begging at tourist areas will be intense. Like, Slumdog Millionaire is NOT fiction.
